Private Disability Benefits
and Work
If you currently receive private disability benefits and want to work or increase your income, carefully review your disability policy, as companies are strict about their policies. Start with the policy’s definition of disability and how much you’re allowed to work and maintain benefits.
Some policies encourage a return to work by offering residual or partial disability. This means you could work a certain number of hours without losing benefits. Some policies may even offer to pay for vocational rehabilitation services if you are unable to return to your previous occupation and want to be retrained for something else.
Understanding the policy coverage, restrictions, and your rights is important to ensuring that your policy isn’t canceled. If you are seriously considering a return to work, contact your disability insurance company. Find out what return-to-work initiatives they offer, and request their answers in writing.
